Chapter 15

Sassy

I’ve never considered himself technologically challenged, but no matter how many times I tried to upload this file to the server, it continues to crash. I fought with it for twenty minutes, muttering curses under my breath. When the knock came at my door, I’m ready to bite the head off anyone who dares interrupt me.

“It’s a virus, it’s nothing personal,” Sassy says, although I haven’t so much as let out a word about my troubles. “Half the practice got it.”

“It’s set me back a day’s work. Damn it. I told Paul we need to update the virus protection.”

Sassy laughs and pats my shoulder.“Never fear. Sassy’s here. I’ll have you back up and running in no time.

“If you can do that,” I tell her, “I’ll buy you dinner tonight.”

Sassy flirts with everyone; I’ve seen it. She flirts with me all the time, and I usually flirt back, but we’ve never taken it farther than that. I didn’t mean anything with the offer of dinner, other than appreciation. Yet later, sitting across from her while we both sip glasses of very good red wine, I have to admit that Sarah Roth might be my match.

Not like a romantic partnership type of match. More like she’s the first woman I’ve met in a long time, since Marcia Adams, actually, who seems fully capable of straight-up making me an offer of a string-free fuck…and more than that, convincing me both that she means it and that she’s capable of sticking to the part about there being no strings.

Across the table, she lets her gaze linger longer than it needs to. Every now and then, even over the smells of garlic and oil and fresh bread, I can catch her subtle scent. A perfume I can’t name, but it wafts its way through every nook and cranny I have, and I’m uncomfortably semi-hard in a couple of minutes.

“You’re so beautiful. I’d love to sketch you,” she says.

“I didn’t know you were an artist.”

“I’m not, really. Art’s something I do for fun. It’s not my career.”

“You don’t have to make a living at it to be considered an artist.” I lean across the table toward her so I can fill her glass again from the bottle we’ve almost emptied.

Do I want to do this? It’s no seduction, unless maybe I’m the one being seduced. I like Sassy, but I don’t want to lose her amazing IT skills. She’s the only one the firm’s ever hired who can actually get the job done.

Do I want to do this because she’s made it clear she’s willing, that there are no further expectations, because I always do it, because I am that guy, the one who’ll take it wherever he can get it?

Do I want to do this because Sassy, at least, wants me?

The rest of the dinner passes quickly. Shared dessert. Discussion about books. She’s easy to talk to, but I knew that already. She says she’ll catch a cab home, but I offer to drive her.
